As much as the internet is a great equalizer – allowing anyone from a single lonely blogger to tiny companies to create compelling conversations with readers and find customers from all over the world – big budget endeavors are making it increasingly difficult for the little guys to shine. Enter Yakaboutit.com a new website that's all about the little guy...  read full entry

Since she's single and has no children, Girlawhirl tries to find a way to help wherever she can when it comes to back to school. Maybe she'll fund a project at donorschoose.org, or she'll check out the local YMCA's after school programs and find out what they need. It always amazes her at how far a relatively small donation, like $50, can go. This year she's found a new way to make a difference…

Donors Choose is one of Girlawhirl's favorite charities and she makes it a point to check out the website each year when back to school season approaches. On the site, teachers explain a specific need or project that they'd like funding for and an estimate of what it will cost, and people make donations to cover as much as they can. With so many of her Super Pals out on interviews these days, recent meet-ups have turned into “how-should-I-have-answered-this-question?” sessions. And it's a bit alarming what's being asked. One friend was asked if she had children before she was barely settled into the chair. Another was asked what year she graduated college – a closely veiled attempt at nailing down her age. And while yes, the college question is perfectly legal, and part of one's resume anyway, there are some things that are not supposed to be discussed in an interview. Girlawhirl and her Super Pals got the scoop from attorney Jeff Isaac…

With so many of her friends looking for work these days, Girlawhirl's learning more and more about what applying for a job is like in the cyber age. She remembers when getting the name of someone to send a resume to was as easy as a phone call to the company's main number, and everyone replied, often offering to meet even if there was nothing specific available at the time. Those days are gone, as the hunting, applying and vetting processes are all done online. Girlawhirl has more than a few friends who have applied for many positions without even receiving any kind of reply. So after much trial and error, they've come up with some foolproof strategies for making a resume stand out in the crowd of online applicants…

Girlawhirl loves her career, and she always appreciates that she has the choice to be whatever she wants to be. She loves the fact that if she decided to shake-off this lifestyle and reinvent herself as something totally different she could. And she's keenly aware that even in her mother's day, choices and opportunities for women in business were limited. That's why she's taking a minute or two today – American Business Women's Day – to appreciate all the hard working women that went before her and paved the way …

For charity: water's second anniversary – which just so happens to fall around founder Scott Harrison's September birthday – the organization dedicated to bringing clean, safe water to communities in developing countries is asking others whose birthdays fall during that month to skip the gifts, and have their well-wishers donate to the cause instead…
